Since before Diablo 4’s first season, “Season of the Villain,” the season’s battle pass has been criticized for its apparent lack of meaningful content, but also for how much premium currency (platinum) it rewards players for completing battles.
While there is no specific standard in this area, many games (e.g. Call of Duty/Warzone) offer enough premium currency rewards to buy your next game, meaning you only need to buy a battle pass. Of course, that’s assuming you’ve honed in on each fight from start to finish.
But Diablo 4’s battle pass doesn’t offer enough Platinum to buy the next one, which is surprising since Call of Duty and Diablo are both Activision Blizzard titles, not to mention they have pretty much the same monetization model.
That’s not all, however, as Blizzard seems to have just prepared another slam dunk for players who opted to buy the Season 1 Battle Pass. As Reddit user Caddy-Whompus pointed out, completing the battle pass only gets you 666 platinum.
While we applaud Blizzard’s commitment to the Hell/666 theme and all (the developer even revealed that Diablo 4 made $666 million in sales in its first week alone), this is one area where no commitment is required.
This is because 666 Platinum is not enough to buy a single item in the in-game premium shop, since the starting price is 800 Platinum. If you want to buy something, you’ll either have to save up multiple seasons of Platinum or just whip out your credit card to make up the difference.
On its own, this isn’t a huge deal, but it’s yet another thing that can ruin players’ affection for Season 1, especially after a major nerfing patch. While Blizzard has worked hard to change the way it releases patches, most of those changes are still in place.
Of course, we’ll be releasing another patch in two weeks’ time that will restore players’ confidence in the game with a series of balance tweaks and gameplay changes – all of which will be discussed ahead of this patch’s release. Look forward to the next campfire chat on Friday, July 28th.
