Assassin’s Creed: Shadow will satisfy fans’ long-standing desire for a game set in Japan, but Ubisoft believes now is the right time to make the game.
I remember back in the days of Assassin’s Creed 2, fans of the series asked Ubisoft to make a game set in Japan, or indeed anywhere in Asia. It eventually did so with Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China, but years later, a game set in Japan didn’t arrive in the hands of gamers until 2024 with Assassin’s Creed Shadow. But if you ask the game’s art director Thierry Dansereau, it’s a good thing the studio waited until now to make the game, as it allowed the developers to work on its “new generation of features,” which he believes are “much needed” for a game set in Japan.

“I think the timing is great, though, because it allows us to really develop a new generation of features that I think are necessary to make the most of this setting,” Dansereau said in an interview with Play Magazine (via GamesRadar). The developer went on to point out Assassin’s Creed’s “long history of making games,” and made sure to make it clear that Shadow of War was made “with the pillars of Assassin’s Creed in mind.” Although fans have been waiting for a game set in Japan for years, Dansereau said he believes “making this setting is part of our natural evolution.”
Dansereau also gave a talk at Gamescom last month, which our own Dom attended. During the talk, the art director talked about how the most important factor in helping Ubisoft make shadows feel dynamic was clouds, which you can read in more detail here.
“Assassin’s Creed: Shadow” will be released on November 15th and will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC platforms.
