YouTube Music continues to expand its web app. A new feature now brings the convenience of the mobile app to the browser.
To date, YouTube Music does not offer a native desktop app for Windows, Mac, etc. Rather, subscribers to the music service rely on the browser if they do not want to use the mobile application at home, for example. However, the YouTube Music web app lags behind the mobile app and does not offer all the functions.
What’s missing so far is an offline mode for listening to music without an internet connection. This is a nuisance for some users, especially when using it on the go on a laptop. Apparently the music service is improving. How 9to5Google reports, YouTube has now started rolling out a download function.
Some subscribers could already use the new feature. A download option appears on the song or album pages via the three-point menu. An indicator also shows the download progress.
Filter options for easy discovery
The downloaded files can then be found in your own library under “Downloads”. Filters also allow you to search according to certain criteria. The downloaded music remains available as long as there is an active internet connection at least once every 30 days.
Downloading the music will likely require a paid subscription to YouTube Music. That wouldn’t be surprising since it’s the case with all current streaming services. It is unclear whether podcasts can also be downloaded. Offline mode should be supported under Firefox, Opera, Chrome and Edge.
