The Playstation Vita came out more than 12 years ago: as long as it has been since Sony brought a handheld device onto the market. The YouTuber DIY-Perks, who is known for amazing self-build projects, thought this was a shame and looked for a solution himself – the Playstation Portal wasn’t it.

A handheld would have been difficult due to the size, so he opted for a slightly different form factor: a gaming tablet – the first Playstation 5 gaming tablet.

By the way, DIY-Perks also built the first PS5 Slim. The video We can also highly recommend it!

This is how the inventor proceeded

The project was made possible by the release of the Playstation 5 Slim. The mainboard of the thinner console has a square shape and is significantly smaller than that of the original. The cooling system takes up the most space in the console.

So Matt, the clever inventor behind the YouTube channel, had to design a new cooling system for the tablet. The PS5’s heatsink has a very unusual shape that wouldn’t fit in a tablet, so it used two flat copper blocks attached to the sides of the motherboard. The heat from the processor is then dissipated to the heatsinks via heat pipes and three laptop fans provide active cooling.

After his tests were successful – his cooling system kept the PS5 chip at around 42 degrees Celsius even under load – he moved on to the tablet’s case. He 3D printed the components for this. He retained the black and white design of the PS5.

He even installs a small 2.1 system with a mini subwoofer as a speaker system. But the highlight is the display: Instead of an LCD, it uses the 4K OLED screen of a gaming laptop. The result is just as impressive as it sounds.

The entire process and the result are extremely impressive and educational. We recommend that you watch the video yourself, especially since we haven’t included all the details in this article.

Author’s opinion

Duy Linh Dinh: Now I feel like doing it myself, but I don’t think I would ever be able to do it as well as Matt from DIY-Perks did – plus I don’t have a 3D printer.

Nevertheless, I find the idea extremely exciting and at the end of the video the YouTuber asks an interesting question: Why aren’t there more consoles in tablet format? Sony could make one, he proved. A tablet form factor is also more social and better suited to multiplayer gaming than standard handheld consoles, he argues.

The idea isn’t new: The Nintendo Switch and the Lenovo Legion Go are actually gaming tablets that come with detachable controllers. The question is whether such a “console” with a large screen that can only be played in tabletop mode would sell.

That’s why I ask myself: Would you buy a gaming tablet like this? And what do you think of this DIY project? Write your opinion about it in the comments!
