One should actually assume that there will be peace in the world as soon as Hitler is banished to hell. But puff cake! In the fourth part of the Zombie Army series, his army of darkness continues to terrorize all of Europe. Developer rebellions beyond measure, trashy and bloody shooting party has a lot of B-movie charm and makes a good mood, especially with several players. Putting zombies on the mouth with friends never gets old.
Hitler is dead and banished to hell. Then everything is dead, right? Unfortunately not, because his zombie army continues to shuffle through Europe and rubble everything. In addition, demonic towers appear everywhere. So once again the resistance fighters have to take action, equip themselves with all sorts of weapons and stand up to the undead.
Story? Only if it has to
Of course Hitler has his fingers from hell. The resistance fighters want to put an end to all of this. Zombie Army 4: Dead War has a rudimentary plot to offer, but it only exists so there is a reason to go from A to B. Despite the intrusive B-movie flair, she will probably not knock anyone off her feet. But the developers were certainly aware of this.

There are other reasons to fire up Zombie Army 4 anyway. Solo mode is definitely not one of them. The strength of the zombie shooter lies in its co-op orientation to face the hordes of enemies together with other players. Be prepared for an overly dull gameplay in which you just shoot zombies all the time and in exceptional cases have to perform rudimentary tasks to get to the next safe house. That may sound negative in this formulation, but developer rebellion creates a highly entertaining fun out of it.
The addiction to the high score
Above all, the hunt for points motivates again and again. You get points for eliminating each Zombie Nazi. If you kill several enemies in a row, you increase your multiplier, which can literally build up into a kind of intoxication. At first, these combos may be anything but spectacular, but later you shoot yourself into huge three-digit multiplier spheres. Since you can see your colleagues' points at any time, this creates a driving competition. High scores are as old as video games themselves, but are still motivating today.
Not least because of the highscore implementation, Zombie Army 4: Dead War feels strongly like arcade shooter action. However, the gameplay framework is based on elements of the Sniper Elite series, which relies heavily on realism and also injects zombie army in small doses. For example, you are even able to manually adjust the rifle scope of the rifles at long distances.

In theory, this option is certainly meant to be nice, but not necessary in the chaotic action. When dozens of zombies appear on the horizon, it is usually faster to simply aim a little higher with the crosshair instead of comparing the distance with the setting. You will always hit something with the many opponents anyway. Agile characters and a dodge button might even fit the gameplay better.
A touch of tactics
Especially in the later chapters, Zombie Army 4: Dead War gets a certain pinch of claim, as the level of difficulty increases steadily. You will no longer only be confronted with simple Nazi zombies, but also with heavily armored minions, sneaky snipers or even zombies who use deadly chainsaws or flamethrowers. Then the various perks and weapons that you can improve with upgrade kits also become essential.
The selection is manageable, but each weapon has very special functions. The trench gun shotgun causes electrical damage, for example, while the M1 Garand also shoots fire projectiles. The most interesting thing, however, is the M1911 pistol in conjunction with sacred ammunition: It can be used to spice up teammates, which can save lives in heated moments. At this point it should be commended that you can not only set the level of difficulty as desired, but also the number of zombies in relation to the players.
Higher frame rate = better gunplay
Zombie Army 4: Dead War benefits immensely from a high frame rate. On the Playstation 4 Pro you have the choice between a performance and a quality mode. The graphics in Performance mode look a bit coarse, but the co-op shooter is not a visual treat anyway. However, you are then traveling with a smooth frame rate of 60 frames per second, which significantly enhances the gunplay and feels brisk, direct and simply better.
Especially when you meet enemies in their sensitive areas and the repetition known from Sniper Elite is activated with the kill cam, joy can arise. These sequences don't appear on the conveyor belt, which is why they don't get on your nerves. If you pay attention, you can find extras and secrets in the linear and sometimes extensive areas. Apart from the campaign, the clear highlight of the game, there is also a passable horde mode that does without all the bells and whistles – nice for a few rounds in between.
