A secret from GTA: San Andreas maps is discovered after 20 years
The renowned technical director of Rockstar, Vermeij Obbe, revealed through his count of an unpublished secret about GTA: San Andreas. It turns out that the game was going to be divided into three separate maps with unique features.
Rockstar had the original plan to create three cities as separate entities, all connected by trains or planes that players could travel on with a loading screen in between. It would be a more similar approach to the early GTA games, which also featured cities on separate maps.
As he tells us, the development team felt that this could help solve the problem of the PlayStation 2’s limited memory, which was a critical factor during development. Having separate maps meant that the city models wouldn’t have to be in memory at the same time, which would help with performance. And with more memory, they could give themselves the freedom to implement different vehicles such as ambulances, police cars and even a different climate in each city.
However, the project leaders changed their minds just before the artists began working on the maps. At a Rockstar North meeting, the team opted to forego this secret approach to GTA: San Andrea and stick with a single map. The result was an open world in which players could drive freely between cities, which became a distinctive feature.
A great decision considering the final result, but it leaves us wondering what that GTA: San Andreas would have been like with more unique maps.
