After an unprecedented year of financial loss for the Japanese developer THESE (a team that has been involved in the development of countless projects for Nintendo, Square Enix, Capcom and others), the studio expects ‘Switch 2’ to turn things around in 2025 (thanks, Automaton).
Back in July, TOSE’s third quarter financial report posted a nine-month loss of ¥367 million (about 2.28 million dollars) due to several canceled projects. And yet, the recently revealed co-developer sales forecast (reported Otaku Soken) for the next financial year is up 21.3 percent. Why? Because he expects ‘Switch 2’ to be a hit.
According to Automaton’s translation, TOSE expects Nintendo’s next console to bring “particularly favorable headwinds” to the market, with growing demand for game development.
It seems like a no-brainer if you ask us. You’d imagine that TOSE — which was involved in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Crisis Core, Splatoon 2, and WarioWare: Move It! on the Switch — will be in high demand when Nintendo’s next console rolls into town, and with Nintendo promising an announcement “this fiscal year,” it stands to reason that the next financials will look a little sunnier.
To be fair, the studio isn’t just citing ‘Switch 2’ as its savior for 2025. Along with new Nintendo hardware, the company’s forecast also predicts continued strong demand for PS5 and PC releases, and it already has several major projects in the pipeline, some of which are slated to break in the first half of the next fiscal year.
It looks like exciting times are ahead and, in our opinion, they couldn’t come soon enough. Anticipation for the ‘Switch 2’ seems to have reached a whole new high in the past few months, with a supposed “leak” of its prototype and specs in September and one wacky rumor that it will feature shoulder scrolling buttons.
Are you excited for 2025, THAT much? Yes, us too.
