Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Box Art Brawl.
Last time we looked at Yoshi’s Island for the N64. In the end, the vote heavily favored Japanese box art, which went for a beautiful embroidered aesthetic over the more traditional approach of North America and Europe. With 64% of the vote, Japan won almost overwhelmingly. Well done!
This time, we jump forward a bit in time to 2003 and the launch of Ubisoft’s game Beyond Good and Evil for the GameCube. Although the action-adventure was considered a commercial failure, it nevertheless gained a significant cult following, leading to Ubisoft announcing a sequel in 2008 that… still hasn’t been released. Oh good.
Beyond Good and Evil unfortunately didn’t launch in Japan in 2003, so we’ll just be looking at the North American and European box sets this week. With that in mind, let’s get going, shall we?
Be sure to cast your votes in the poll below; but first, let’s look at the box designs themselves.
North America
Here, both variants are relatively similar to each other. Both feature the game’s journalist protagonist, Jade, who looks extremely badass, we must say. The North American version shows a closer image of the character with the logo itself sitting directly above it.
We can also catch a decent glimpse of the game world in the background, giving the overall image a nice sense of place. All in all, a decent effort!
Europe
Here we can see a bit more of Jade herself as she takes center stage in the composition. The overall brightness of the image is slightly boosted compared to the North American version, and we’d say Jade’s pose is much more impressive.
This is going to be hard! For you guys.
Thanks for voting! See you next time for another round of Box Art Brawl.
