One of the more enjoyable video game announcements of 2022 was the news that Capcom is planning a Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection for the Nintendo Switch and other platforms. The director of the collection, Masakazu Eguchi, spoke to the Japanese site 4Gamer about how it all came about. Mr. Eguchi says they’ve received numerous fan requests for the collection over the years, and those requests have only increased as the 20th anniversary approaches. Eguchi also said that there were various internal departments at Capcom also proposing plans for a port, so it seemed like the right time to make it happen.
First, can you tell us how the plan for the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection came about?
Eguchi: We’ve been getting requests from fans for a long time to port the Mega Man series. Furthermore, we had various departments within the company proposing plans for ports, and so we decided to go for it.
When did development begin?
Eguchi: It’s hard to say exactly, but about two years ago.
Two years ago would have been around the time of the show’s 20th anniversary, right? I assume that around that time the calls to the port would have increased, did they also affect the realization of the project?
Eguchi: Yes of course. We already had plans for ports within the company, but the strengthening of the fans’ voices around that 20th anniversary played a role in their realization. We got a great response when we announced the project.
