The Super Mario Bros. Movie proved to be an absolute powerhouse of a movie and easily surpassed Nintendo and Illuminations’ initial expectations, securing the record for the second biggest animated movie of all time, behind Disney’s Frozen 2. Today, Chris Pratt, the new voice behind Mario, shared the news that the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. to be announced “soon” after the end of the writers’ strike. Pratt went on to say that everyone is extremely grateful for the support they have received from the film and says that “it’s really shocking to me how successful that film has been.”
“One thing Pratt isn’t about to leave alone is the Mario universe, after all Movie Super Mario Bros was a hit. In fact, Pratt teased that news of a sequel should be coming “soon.”
“We are in the middle of this writers’ strike, so everything is paused and [put] on hold for the right reasons,” he said. “I really support the WGA and our writers. Once the negotiations are done and the writers feel comfortable moving forward, then it will be time to start talking about what’s next.”
“However, we are very grateful for the support,” Pratt added. “[It’s] it really shocks me how successful that movie was. I mean, I expected people to like it the way I was excited about it, but it really is multi-generational all over the world. People love it. They love Mario… It’s a really fun, funny, sweet, heartwarming movie and, oh my god, I can’t believe I’m a part of it.”
