He RPG indie science fiction Citizen Sleeper has become very popular recently. It has been highly praised for its great message and coverage on current issues and great importance. He has also been nominated for four BAFTAs, along with the award for British Game of the Year. In an interview with the Eurogamer portal, the designer Gareth Damian Martin
“It’s a very strange and complicated position because it doesn’t feel like a genuine compliment. What does it mean for a non-binary game that’s about the trans experience, that’s about the gig economy, that’s about citizenship issues and refugee cases? And with it, be the best British game? Do I want to be part of a project that consists of sticking all those things under one banner and celebrating them because they are under that banner? It makes me feel very uncomfortable. It is a very complicated situation”.
Damian Martin continues the interview to discuss the game’s themes and ideas in more depth, such as chronic depression and inequality of well-being. Unfortunately, Citizen Sleeper didn’t take home any of the BAFTAs for which he was nominated. These nominations are still evidence that it’s a game worth looking into.
