Today, in honor of the 30th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, SEGA hosted the first ever “Sonic Central” live event, featured on the official Sonic the Hedgehog channels on YouTube and Twitch. During the celebration event, SEGA revealed a host of upcoming entertainment experiences starring the hedgehog himself. The broadcast began with the creators of the upcoming Netflix animated series, Sonic Prime. While no celebration would be complete without some music, SEGA revealed that they will celebrate Sonic’s 30th anniversary with a live orchestral event on June 23 featuring music from Sonic games for the past 30 years with a special preview during Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest. Kickoff Live! on June 10, with special performances by Crush 40 and Tomoya Ohtani.
Following the opening segment, SEGA jumped into the medium where it all began, with a series of supersonic gaming-related announcements that led the hedgehog to the following console, PC, and mobile experiences this year:
Sonic Colors: Ultimate and Sonic Colors: Rise of the Wisps: SEGA revealed Sonic Colors: Ultimate, an adrenaline-pumping remastering of the beloved 2010 platformer Sonic Colors, along with a colorful debut trailer. Sonic Colors: Ultimate will be released both digitally and physically on PlayStation 4, Microsoft Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, with a digital-only release on PC via the Epic Game Store on September 7, 2021. As part of Sonic’s 30th celebration, IDW will release a special 80-page oversized comic featuring three stories of colorful heroes and cowardly villains. The gold and silver 30th anniversary commemorative coins will also be available this year at APMEX.
