In March, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro developer Toys for Bob announced that they would be leaving Activision and the Xbox team to become an independent studio. In a social media update, now it’s official with profile update.
The bio description on Xu now reads “We are an independent game development studio creating epic entertainment since 1989.” So that’s it, the California developer is officially independent!
Along with this news, the studio has already confirmed that it will be partnering with Xbox to release its next new game, which is still in the “very early” stages of development.
As highlighted on our sister site Pure Xbox, the studio’s official website was recently updated with a mysterious logo. This follows new rumors in March, which suggested that toys for Bob could potentially working on a new Spyro game.
Aside from the Xbox release, it’s not clear what other platforms this new Toys for Bob project could be released on at this stage. Since its acquisition of Activision Blizzard and Bethesda (which included Crash and Spyro), Microsoft has reiterated that it won’t necessarily lock down IP and mentioned how exclusivity would be decided on a case-by-case basis
It has already signed a 10-year deal to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo platforms, and recently released Grounded and Pentiment on the Switch eShop. Toys for Bob previously developed Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time and Spyro Reignited Trilogy.
