Speaking to VGC, Dave The Diver creator and Mintrocket’s newly appointed CEO Jaeho Hwang said he would like to take the IP into uncharted waters by creating games based on various characters from the first game and seeing what stories can be told about them.
These statements come on the heels of Mintrocket’s recent split from parent company Nexon, which granted it independence following the success it achieved with Dave The Diver.
“I want to expand the Dave the Diver IP itself. I think it’s every director’s dream, since we have a relatable character. But really, we didn’t go deep into personal stories in Dave the Diver, because we wanted to keep the game casual.”
“So as a director, apart from the story DLC we’re working on right now, I also want to make separate games about each character to show how they met, what they did before coming to the Blue Hole. In this sense, game genres can be different. Maybe one day, if we start making Dave’s backstory game, we could make Dave [another profession]. He’s always been a diver, so we really didn’t think about moving with Dave.”
Hwang also signaled a desire to keep Mintrocket tightly coupled and smaller in size, despite the freedom it’s now been given.
“I think we will stay small. I mean, the definition of small can vary. Dredge, they only have four people on the development team. But I think a team of 20 to 30 people is ideal.”
“That way it’s easier to communicate and easier to be on the same page. I think Mintrocket can get bigger in the future in terms of size, if we are confident in what we are doing now.”
“But that means we’ll have more teams of a similar size or maybe start doing some publishing stuff. But that doesn’t mean we’re going to have a big team of 100 people.”
