Back in August of last year, when Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom had only been out in the wild for three months, we asked you how your completion percentage was doing. Given the size of the game, it was understandable that 37% of respondents still hadn’t beaten the final boss and therefore still didn’t know their completion percentage.
Still, nine months later, we’re guessing many of you will defeat Ganondady in an epic duel and claim the credit for Nintendo’s most anticipated game of 2023. years…
or are you? Speaking to the Nintendo Life team, it seems that some of us still haven’t gotten around to giving TOTK’s big bad sound, even a year after its release. The game is so massive and there is so much to it else to do, we’re wondering if you’ve bookmarked Tears of the Kingdom or if it’s become your ultimate background game. Or if *whisper it* you left and never came back.
To mark the first anniversary, we’re checking back in to see who from the team finished the fight, and who’s still enjoying the journey 366 days later. Spoilers coming, obviously…

I mean, I guess this isn’t really fair (considering I reviewed the game), but yes, I beat Ganondorf. I beat him over a year ago. Take that, Demon King. Was it easy? hell no I had no idea what I was getting myself into and was woefully underprepared. This wasn’t like Breath of the Wild, which I played a few months after the game launched, and there were guides on how to do things. Not. Depends on the me tell people how to take on Ganondorf alone. *SIP*
So the first time passed… okay? I’ve reached the second stage, let’s just say that much. But I ate all my darkness cure meals on the way to the boss without even considering that Ganondorf himself could cause Darkness damages and removes hearts, permanently. I learned the hard way. But that didn’t stop me from running in a second time, did it? Or the third. It became a matter of pride at that moment. I want beat ganondorf without the dark cure stuff.
In the end I gave in and had to go breed Sundelions, buy dark resistant armor and health boosting food. Basically, I just had to be patient and bring the tools. Oh, and make sure my mainsword is ready. That last time I managed to make it through every single stage.
As for completion percentage, I haven’t touched the game in about six months, so I’m still in the high 60% range. I’m quite comfortable saying that I’ll never get 100% because it’s just a long way off, far too much work and the game could lose its luster. I did a lot, and other colleagues helped me with things that I couldn’t do. I’m happy.

Oh God. I know I’m going to get a lot of backlash for this, but yes, I fell for Tears of the Kingdom again. I really tried with that, I swear. There’s just something about it that didn’t hook me like Breath of the Wild did and now I’m afraid I probably won’t try it again.
So, no, dear reader, I did not defeat Ganondorf. Actually, I’ll tell you how far I’ve come. I beat the Water Temple and the Wind Temple, and that’s about it. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely took my time with it and racked up around 60-70 hours (which is way more than most games I’ve played), but now knowing how far away I am from beating the game makes me want to keep it locked in forever drawers.
So, I feel sorry for Zelda and I feel sorry for Hyrule. I just can’t help you this time.
