Not a fun way to start the week, but unfortunately, there have been more layoffs in video game development. According to Bloomberg, Embracer Group is canceling the next entry in the Deus Ex series after two years of development.
As a result, it is laying off “a number of employees as part of an ongoing cost-cutting initiative.” The statement revealed that 97 people were laid off from development teams, administration and support services. Here is the full statement:
Eidos, the Montreal-based developer behind the title, has now shifted its focus to the “original franchise.” Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut was previously released on Wii U in 2013.
Embracer Group also made cuts at Crystal Dynamics, and TimeSplitters developer Free Radical also shut down last December. Outside of Embracer Group, Microsoft announced 1,900 layoffs last week, and Riot Games also cut more than 500 jobs earlier this month.
