In this case, it seems that Epic Games, responsible for the game, has been forced to pay a fine from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for the way it displays its purchases. This is what was shared:
- Epic Games will have to pay a total of $520 million in compensation for allegations that the company violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
- This is because the company reportedly introduced strange ways known as dark patterns to trick millions of gamers into making unintentional purchases.
- On the one hand, Epic will pay a monetary penalty of $275 million for violating the COPPA rule, “the highest penalty ever obtained for violating an FTC rule.” On the other, Epic will pay $245 million to reimburse consumers for its billing practices, “the FTC’s largest reimbursement in a gaming case and its largest administrative order in history.”
