Warning: Major spoilers for Final Fantasy VII

The Nintendo Switch version of the PS1 classic JRPG Final Fantasy VII was recently updated to remove the restriction the game had on taking screenshots during certain cutscenes.

All players can click the record button on their controllers to capture screenshots or record a 30-second video that is saved and then shared on social media or on a mobile device.

But certain Switch games, like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, have no video recording feature at all, while others, like Persona 5 Royal, ban screenshot and video recording functions during certain moments of the story.

Final Fantasy VII is of the latter kind, and its limitation comes about halfway through the game at a moment so well-known it's practically common knowledge:

Aerith's death is the moment in question. The flower girl ends up in the hands of Sephiroth, setting off the events of Disc 2 as Cloud and his companions are forced to continue the fight without her by their side.

Screen recording was originally banned during all scenes surrounding her death and the end of DIsc 1, but the ban has now been lifted in version 1.03.

The same restrictions were present on other platforms and have all been removed.

It may have something to do with the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth earlier this year, but details are scarce.
