After our articles were voted by the Top 50 readers of the decade, Nintendo Life staff will be selecting their favorite Nintendo games between 2010 to 2009. Today, Gavin looks back nearly seven years and tries to remember his baby's name …
Throwing your favorite game away from the relevance of the decade is a difficult proposition. It involves understanding the intangible. What does it mean to love & # 39; The games I enjoyed the most were encountering people, places and times of my life where the game itself was one, one part of a puzzle. They are irreparably bound to memory and these days I have trouble remembering what I did this weekend. You can suggest looking at solid metrics such as Most Played Game to help come to that decision, however StreetPass Mii Plaza really my game of the decade?
My introduction to the Fire Emblem series is over Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones. Since I first got into the 3DS (and paid top dollar before the price was cut), I was eligible for the Ambassador program and about 20 Virtual Console games that were gifted. I played through many GBA special offerings for the first time and Holy Salon was one of them. I've tried Wars of Advance back in the day but somehow left it (I have to go back and try again), but the story mix with Fire Emblem hit me fast and I ate some holy stones on my 2012 trip to the moon.
Being a listener of 8-4 Play the podcast (look if you are a fan of Japanese, games or Japanese games), hearing that they were supportive of the upcoming 3DS intervention has inspired me to be early, and digital – something new for me at the time. I remember thinking if I wanted to wait until morning to have a box or start playing that night (a few days after the EU launch on Sunday 21st April 2013 according to my 3DS Activity Log – how I missed these figures on the switch). Impatience got the better of me, so I got it from the eShop and went inside.
I do not remember why, but for some reason I went straight to Hard Hard. Maybe I heard that that was a better way to play (certainly because of the recent entry into Switch). Whatever the reason, it was the right decision; The level of challenge-worthy challenge that blurred the line between frustration and compulsion and it was difficult to reset many, many times. Permadeath is a basic part of the series, but I didn't want to let any of my team go well (or not so gently) for that wonderful night – not on my watch! In fact, I've doubled my playing time with a reset as I restart battles often to make the rest of my team survive.
Where often such a rigmarole would get me into the game immediately, the awakening was bright enough to make a hard reset important. Just me had to go back, re-think, re-do, and re-use my team. I am invested in every aspect of the game – the position, the strategy of the landscape, the character and the type of weapons, and the stories behind the characters themselves. All components are involved in making Awakening one of the most challenging and rewarding games I've ever played.
Most of its attraction is even documented. The web of interactions between all characters is complex and relationships are formed and strengthened in a program that puts friendship at the heart of the game, the stadium and the community. Fighting on the other strengthens the couple's bond and you find yourself playing a social engineer and linking additions to enemy castles. The spunky Sully quickly stole my heart and we ended up getting married and fighting back again and again. We had a baby, too, even though I'm not crazy about the details. I've told you I can't remember what I had for breakfast – do you expect me to remember my baby's name? However, it's about sex! Are you sure sticking to the memory …
In addition to the synergy between narrative and gameplay, it is one of the games that made use of the 3DS functionality well. The battlefield UI and map were well designed and easy enough to connect without it, but the 3D effect separated each layer and made it a powerful way to understand what was going on wonderfully. An exciting soundtrack and great presentation are compiled which should be one of the most complete 3DS packages: it would seem that you would agree too. The game is so good that you don't really notice the lack of actors' feet.
You would think you enjoyed waking up so much that I would have gone ahead to eat Penalties and Shadows of Valentia, but some games got in the way. Lastly, in particular, I wish to return to him sometime, but have had it Fire Cone: Three houses I've been sitting on my switch for months and just stabbed more than thirty stains and others games waiting to be played. This I do now – buy and collect good games and never play bad things. Maybe it's just another aspect of the way it looks back when I wake up. Back then I had time to pump 100+ hours on the SRPG and completely lost it, it's hard to reset most of the time without paying attention to the clock.
So, there it is – I was going with Fire Emblem: Awakening. Shout Super Super Galaxy 2, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Dark Souls II, Wild Breathing, Sold and about forty others, but the wake was very special to me. Is it truly my favorite & # 39; s game & # 39; a decade ago? Pah, I'm not sure what that means. All I know is great a game worth hunting down for the 3DS to play.
