What's more fun than playing some of your favorite games on the switch? If your answer is something in the & # 39; s struggle to control the controller & # 39 ;, then you're in luck, as 8BitDo has finally come close to producing their dinky Zero controller with a Zero 2 imaginative model Unlike the first in line, this one is Nintendo switch, as well as standard competitors for Mac, Windows, Android, and Linux. Can this little controller find the right place in your large cupboard full of packs?
Well, let's get one thing out first; this is almost annoying. Not only is there less than one Joy-Con on its side, but also too much light, weighs only 20g. You might look at the pictures in this review and think it & # 39; s too small & # 39 ;, but suffice it to say, before we got our hands on it we were ready for how small it was indeed , and, unfortunately, this means that using them can be a little tricky – but we'll explain why later.
A range of SNES-like buttons are all available and calculated for them; D-pad buttons, ABX and Y for face, start and select (or + and +), and two shoulder buttons in the form of L and R. For most 2D sidecrollers this is what you really need, and leaving the Home Button among other useful buttons is disappointing, there are some customization options that are used internally.
By pressing down on the D-Pad and selecting at the same time, you will be returned to the home menu. In addition, if you are playing SNES or NES games, you will be lamenting the absence of the ZL and ZR button, because by pressing both of these things has brought a very important menu to the experience. Well, they've figured that out too, and you can generate these entries by simply pressing Start and selecting at the same time. These are lovely lovely ideas that help provide extra functionality for some simple controls, but without blurring what little space is left. Higher grades.
So what does it feel like to use? It should come as no surprise that the size of the controller is a little obstructive, to say the least; we found a few situations where we couldn't maintain our hold on it despite our best efforts, and while that is partly due to the large chunks of flesh some of us are born with, we're not sure that there are many people (other than the very young) who will find this comfortable control that you can use at any given time.
Dimensions aside, the Zero 2 is actually very functional; the buttons all feel solid and responsive, the D-pad is high, and the build quality feels very good for something a little too basic. The only slight decrease is the L and R buttons, both slightly and it stimulates our cravings, which means you have to push harder and harder than we expect to receive an answer from them. There are certain difficulties that must come from the complexity of using Zero 2; we can't say for sure if this would be a long-term affair or not, but we suspect it would be fun to party on the roof.
And that doesn't even begin to mention the physical aspect of this controller. We won't think of many applications where having this small and portable pad would be the most practical to carry than Joy-Con already attached to your console, but if you think there's something worth it there & # 39; we will not argue with you; maybe four local game players with two packs of Joy-Con and two Zero 2's what do you want?
As a last-minute bonus, we should also mention that even though it's only a digital input, the D-pad doesn't behave like one – rather, it mimics the left analogue stick. This may seem small at first but this opens up a corresponding library too much, as far as I'm going to do it Super Smash Bros. Finally surprisingly playable (with the right control settings)
In short, 8BitDo Zero 2 is something new, but fun. Considering how stupid the whole idea is, in fact the app works and is well made. With proper care, we can easily see this thing live for years and years. It puts its dysfunction on its sleeves – and that it is at least highly commendable – but whether or not it makes sense to get a fork for one coin is a decision you have to make.
