The head of the Sonic Team has talked a little more about their intentions for classic 2D Sonic games. They initially planned to just bring 2D Sonic back for the series 20th anniversary project, but they now realise his true worth and value after the success of Sonic Mania which was unleashed back in 2017 for the Nintendo Switch and other systems. Mr. Iizuka says that he is hopeful that classic Sonic will continue to part of Sonic’s future. Sonic Origins, which is a package of classic Sonic games in HD, releases next year.
“Initially, we thought bringing the ‘classic’ Sonic into the fold was just going to be a 20th anniversary project, but it was met with such positive responses from fans that we knew we would keep him around. In fact, we have released Sonic Mania focused on the ‘classic’ Sonic in 2017. The ‘classic’ Sonic is a popular iteration who will hopefully be a part of the blue blur’s future.”
