Hyperkin has been one of the big names in the new & # 39; for retro for some time now, thanks to products like RetroN 5 and Supa Boy. The company is back with a new device – RetroN Jr. – which plays the entire Game Boy library on your HDTV.
Looking to gain a little more insight into this new console, we sat down with Sebastian Jennings, Owner Product Director and license, for a brief discussion.
Nintendo's Life: What inspired you to focus your next product on the Game Boy family?
Sebastian Jennings: The big promotion of RetroN Jr. providing an updated, more comfortable way to play Game Boy games with HD TV and gamepad setup.
Game Boy range is obviously associated with portable gaming – why did you choose to make this a home console rather than a handheld, or portable device that could connect to your TV?
The benefits of playing Game Boy on home TV are to take advantage of the big screen. This would allow gamers to admire their classics as well, this time in a comfortable living room instead of those who ride light cars on the road. The sorting and playback style of the handheld console is renewable and more patient. Now your whole family sees you struggling through these valleys. This gives a completely new perspective on your favorite RPGs and puzzle games that you enjoyed as a kid.
There is a lot of hypocrisy around FPGA technology when it comes to creating a new & # 39; classic comforts these days; we already discovered that RetroN Jr. uses software rating – was this a cost-effective option or did you feel that your software simulation was enough to satisfy many players?
Although the hearts supported by the FPGA have become the most popular gaming system, we find that software simulation is still an effective remedy for RetroN Jr. – Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games are almost 100% compatible with RetroN Jr.
Is there a way that players can download ROMs to the console, or will they need original cartridges?
Like all our previous comforters, original cartridges will be required to play games on RetroN Jr.
When is RetroN Jr. will it work with Flash cartridge?
Flash cartridges will not be supported.
It's not the only company entering the space in 2020 – Analogue is developing a handheld console that will use the same games. How closely do you look at the product?
We are always excited to see projects from other companies, especially when it comes to retro gaming. The analogue supports the spirit and intelligence we are trying to support in the creative process.
Analogue Pocket, like other Analogue & # 39; s consoles, arrives in a different market than RetroN Jr. which can be seen at a price point. RetroN Jr. it provides a solution for anyone looking to play their cartridge in the simplest and easiest way, of course, while looking good too.
Which feature of RetroN Jr. very proud of it?
We are very excited about the feature of the RetroN Jr. form RetroN Jr. technically it's a home computer, but we aim to make it small enough to be easily connected and playable on the go.
You've released RetroN 5 previously, which runs all kinds of game formats. Is the release of RetroN Jr. shows that you're moving down a more focused path, with lanes that already work in one format than a few?
Not at all. We want to do our best to explore all the creative ways we can grow the RetroN family to meet market needs and market gaps. RetroN 5 helped us gauge what the public wants in the HD console. We have started slowly rolling out new HD vibrations in what we consider a new line of RetroNs. This started with RetroN HD, Supa RetroN HD, RetroN 77, and recently Mega RetroN HD.
These consoles, with the exception of RetroN 77, are digital solutions that do not use the application, such as RetroN 5. Yes, we have released RetroN 2 HD, which is compatible with NES and Super NES, so we also release many HD consoles.
We would like to thank Sebastian for his time.
