The head of Sonic Team Takashi Iizuka has appeared on IGN live stream and has stated that he would love to continue the much-loved Sonic Adventure series which first started on the Dreamcast in 1998. He said that Sonic Frontiers will possibly pave the way for a new Sonic Adventure game due to the teams experience working with the new game engine and their continued experience of accommodating Sonic in a large open 3D space.
Iizuka-san: I’ve mentioned this in previous interviews, but I would like to continue the Sonic Adventure series. Sonic Adventure also contains smaller open spaces known as Adventure Fields. I think we’ve used what we learned with those in this game as well. I haven’t thought about my next game yet. But I personally think it’d be nice if we could use what we learn with this game in Sonic Adventure.
