It's been a while since we last heard of Nintendo's deal with Illumination to bring Mario to the silver screen, but Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa shared a brief update to the newly-listed company of financial companies known as Mon Monnes.
In terms of renewal, the film is "going well" and the aim is now to be shown in theaters by 2022. Nintendo will be eligible for the film, meaning "free of business opportunities" Nintendo and Universal Pictures are sponsoring its production.
Furukawa describes the film as "one of Nintendo's" great examples "of creating opportunities for consumers to interact with Nintendo IP. It's a project that Nintendo "participates in" from development and production, with both Nintendo owning Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination chief executive Chris Meledandri co-producing the film.
Looking forward to seeing how this happens? After seeing Detector Pikachu, we actually feel hopeful to think about it.
