GamesIndustry.biz is back with its annual predictions for the year, and it seems like industry experts think it’s about to be a big year for Nintendo.
Mat Piscatella of NPD, Dr Serkan Toto of Kantan Games, and Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis all predicted that the Switch family would be the best-selling console of 2021, and although Piscatella was unconvinced that Nintendo would be releasing a new model, the latter two disagree.
When asked for his first 2021 prediction, Dr Toto begins with the launch of the Switch Pro. “I predict a beefed-up 4K device is coming during Nintendo’s next financial year,” he says in the interview with GI.biz. However, last year Dr Toto predicted a “spectacular game on mobile from Nintendo” – a prediction that he says was false (no love for Pokémon Café Mix, then). He adds that “Switch is just a word”, but we’re not entirely sure what that means. It’s… a little ominous, actually.
Harding-Rolls is a little more reserved when it comes to Nintendo’s next move. Last year, he said that the launch of the Switch Pro was “unlikely” in 2020 – and he was right. Now, he says that the Switch Pro would make “commercial sense”, and that he currently has it in his 2021 forecasts.
We don’t know anything, of course, but after many years of Switch Pro rumours, we’re understandably wary, even if the new predictions come from people who get paid to do this stuff.
Could 2021 be the year of 4K Nintendo gaming, at last? Would you upgrade to a Switch Pro if you had the choice? Discuss in the comments below!
