Sega Sammy has suggested that it may join other major publishers in raising the prices of some of its games to $70.
In a recent Question and answer session (Thank you, VGC) with Group President/CEO Haruki Satomi and Group SVP/CFO Koichi Fukazawa confirmed that the company will be revising the prices of its titles following the $69.99 games that have appeared in the past year.
Here is the full quote:
“In the global market, AAA console game titles have been selling for $59.99 for years, but last year saw the emergence of titles selling for $69.99. We would like to review the prices of titles that we believe are commensurate with the increase price, while also keeping an eye on market conditions.”
It is not clear at this stage if the potential price increase will be across the board for Sega’s future catalog or if it will only be for specific games. Nintendo itself recently launched The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for $69.99 in North America, with NoA boss Doug Bowser stating that “the price reflects the type of experience fans can expect when it comes to gaming these games”.
Sega has a number of titles launching in the coming weeks and months for the Nintendo Switch, including Sonic Origins Plus, Samba de Amigo: Party Central, and the Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection. Interestingly, however, the latter is marked down on the US eShop at $79.99, but that’s due to a collection featuring three remastered titles from the DS and 3DS, which Sega says is “a lot of content and gameplay.” .
