“Or whatever”

Big greetings once again, NL team!
Everyone has that one game in their library that they could talk about for hours, but no one seems to have heard of.
What are your favorite “Obscurer” games that you could talk about for hours?
Mine is definitely Mischief Makers, it’s one of the few American games I have in my N64 library.
I hope you all have a good week, many blessings be upon you or whatever
Metacrystal

Mischief Makers is a treasure, for sure. (Did you understand?) I’m having trouble thinking of one myself — one person’s Kuru Kuru Kururin is another’s Tetris, and if you’ve been around the neighborhood, you start to see familiar games ‘mined’ like hidden gems. Have you heard of this game, Mole Mania!? Yes, Jenson. Yes I have.

But let’s not overdo it! It is natural that younger players will not encounter what I did at their age. In fact, for me, it’s easier to remember a Switch game from a few years ago that was buried by all the other Switch games. Just Shapes & Beats is one of the best games on the system. Let it go. – Ed.

“I caught myself”

Hi Nintendo Life,

I recently caught myself re-reading the Switch 2 rumors and was just wondering if you think there is room for Nintendo to ever be that innovative with their console design moving forward? The Switch as a hybrid home and portable system has always been a dream console, right? So I don’t want to count on the company at all, but I find it hard to believe that they can ever get away with leaving that hybrid nature behind without it feeling like a step backwards? Do you have any ideas?
Martin

‘Another Switch’ sounds like anathema to Nintendo’s ‘surprise and delight’ mode, but I’d say that whatever it does, the next console needs to be a hybrid that you can detach from the TV. The cross-demographic convenience of walking into your life regardless of your circumstances is something I can’t afford to lose. However, that doesn’t mean the new Joy-Con won’t have a vitality sensor for your little finger, or that the back of the console won’t have an e-ink screen for low-fi games that look like Playdate or StreetPass notifications. Hell, run it.

There are few Switch-like alternatives out there today, so Nintendo will need to innovate to set the ‘Switch 2’ apart, but until new technology enables holography (or something equally cool) at a mass-market price, it’s hard to imagine a Wii-style innovation. – Ed.

“18+ in Europe”

Dear Nintendo Life,
Thank you again for all you do! I love having a reliable, unbiased and respectful news source for all my Nintendo news.

Having seen a few letters from last month talking about NSO, I’d love to know what you think about Nintendo modding games to be suitable for Switch Online. They’ve already made minor changes for online support and such, but what about the bigger changes? For example, we know Red and Blue aren’t there for the gambling aspects that make the re-release 18+ in Europe: would it be worth it for Nintendo to change or leave out those parts of the game (if possible) to fit PEGI’s rating standards? I’m not sure Nintendo would ever do that, but I was wondering how you feel about it in theory.

Thank you!
Nintendoid720

Thanks for the kind words, ‘doid. It is my understanding that a score of 18 for Red and Blue would only apply if a remake kept the Game Corner in its original form. So the Red and Blue NSO re-releases wouldn’t automatically get an 18 in Europe (although they might get a 12, like on the 3DS Virtual Console).

When it comes to minor changes, it depends. With highly questionable content, I’d always prefer a disclaimer splash screen, but Nintendo doesn’t have big, Disney levels of historical ‘hmm’ when it comes to things you just wouldn’t release today. With something like simulated gambling, I would personally treat it in a similar way. – Ed.

“shy lately”

Given that Nintendo has been very coy lately about who actually developed their first games, is it possible that they’re protecting the team in case it’s poorly received? Thanks, I love the work everyone at NL is doing.
Daniel Hazzard

Once the game is released, the name will be immediately in the checkout so everyone will know who is responsible if it’s a turkey. I opinion is that this is most likely a safety measure so that the partner companies are not bombarded with questions from the media and fans for months/years in advance. Nintendo wants to control messaging and prevent accidental slips and confirmations from disrupting marketing plans.

Jim recently wrote a soapbox on the subject — fill your boots below if you missed it. – Ed.
