The Wii U’s successor, the Nintendo Switch, has been available for years. However, there are still Wii U games, as well as retro Virtual Console titles not yet available on Nintendo Switch Online, that cannot be played on the hybrid console. Because of this, there are still some benefits to Wii U gaming.
Unfortunately, many gamers who haven’t used their Wii U in a while find that their Wii U no longer works when booted up. The Wii U seems to have lingering memory system errors, specifically the 160-0103 memory error that can appear on the GamePad. None of the affected Wii U consoles have been modified or tampered with in any way, but all user reports mention that they haven’t played their Wii Us in years.
The corruption leading to the errors appears to be related to the NAND. Users who have bricked their Wii Us report that resetting the console to factory settings does not solve the problem. So, it became quite clear that the only method that could save a gamer’s console was a NAND backup. Unfortunately, even a previously saved backup would result in a tricky process, as Nintendo no longer provides official Wii U support.
In fact, due to the age of the Wii U, players can no longer send the console in for repair. Nintendo UK has some instructions for the aforementioned error code, but users facing the error report that these instructions do not work. For now, it is suggested that Wii U players turn on their console from time to time to avoid the problem.
