If you think back to April, you might remember that tactical RPG Dicefolk was confirmed to be coming to the Switch. A month later, publisher Good Shepherd Entertainment and developers LEAP Game Studios and Tiny Ghoul announced that this monster-catching roguelike would be headed our way. June 20.
There are a lot of different genre terms that pop up here, so if you haven’t come across Dicefolk yet, we’ll do our best to break it down for you (but you should also watch the explainer trailer above, of course) .
This is a tactical roguelike at heart where your wins and losses are decided by your understanding of dice and monster capture mechanics. You’ll single-handedly capture a team of creatures, the ‘Chimera’, and put them into battles where your actions come down to rolling dice.
But this is not just a matter of luck. In Dicefolk, you also control your own and your opponent’s moves, choosing who will act when and what they will have a chance to do. It’s an interesting twist on the turn-based and RNG formula and, if the game’s positive reviews are anything to go by Steam whatever, it seems to work pretty well.
You can get a little more information about the game’s story and take a peek at some screenshots below.
Begin your quest as a Chimera Summoner, in a world on the brink of extinction thanks to the evil wizard, Salem. Like Alea, young Dice people
hero, you will encounter a multitude of terrifying creatures that you can choose to join your party using the magic of your cube. Nurture relationships and recruit your favorite companions. Keep all of your chimera’s abilities in mind to fully utilize your team’s strengths to defeat Salem and free your country from his grip. With over 100 creatures and items to collect, the possibilities seem endless.
The monster designs look cute enough, and we can imagine that with a little practice, that dice system will open up levels of “just one more run” strategy. If you like roguelikes with a bit of strategy, this might be worth a shot.
Dicefolk will launch on Change eShop June 20 for $11.99 (or your regional equivalent). Those looking to plant their flag early on this game can now pre-order the game at a pre-launch discount.
