By now, you're more than likely aware of the news that Nintendo has filed a lawsuit against James “Archbox” Williams, whom Nintendo is accusing of pirating the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo recently provided details on how the company was able to identify him in the first place. But it seems Nintendo doesn't want to stop at just Williams. They are also interested in identifying his business associates.
You see, late last week Nintendo released another court filing. There, the company is asking the court for permission to subpoena Internet domain name companies such as Name Cheap, Go Daddy and Tucows. They also want to invite Cloudflare, GitHub, Discord, Google and Reddit. This is because Nintendo wants business records so they can find more pirates to sue. Specifically, Nintendo wants to go after the people Williams may be related to and associated with, saying that “the purpose of any subpoena sought is to seek relevant information needed by the NOA to pursue infringement claims.”
Nintendo was particularly interested in Reddit, with the company stating that “the defendant was the primary moderator of the SwitchPirates community, under the name 'Archbox,' which boasted more than 190,000 members. Nintendo has reason to believe that other accounts active in the SwitchPirates community may also have been controlled by the Defendant or reflect other individuals who worked alongside the Defendant.” So it seems that the r/SwitchPirates subreddit will likely be Nintendo's #1 target in their hunt for Williams collaborators.
