It’s been an incredibly difficult time for the video game industry with layoffs, restructuring, and studio closures. Luckily, Nintendo is in a great place right now thanks to the Switch.
Following the recent acquisition of Shiver Entertainment, Page 22 Summary of the 84th shareholders’ meeting has revealed that the company currently has 7,724 employees in its books on a global level, and the increase in the number of employees compared to the end of the previous fiscal year amounted to 407 employees.
While Nintendo hired more employees, Microsoft actually cut 1,900 jobs at Xbox, Bethesda and Activision Blizzard. Sony also laid off 900 employees this year.
Nintendo’s recent acquisition of Shiver Entertainment notes that the studio will “remain the same” – with the goal of porting and developing software for “multiple platforms” including the Switch. This follows Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa confirming that a “successor” to the Switch will be revealed at some point this fiscal year.
The Japanese company also recently revealed that Switch sales have now surpassed more than 140 million units worldwide, although he recognizes that it will be “more of a challenge to maintain momentum” with the new system potentially impacting these sales.
