Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma and Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom director Satoshi Terada participated in a new interview with Famitsu. The interview revealed that the team intended to have Link voiced by an actor for the first time on Switch, but they scrapped the idea after testing it because they said it didn’t seem right.
Dry: Actually, Link spoke first.
The interviewer: What?! Terada: We let Link talk a bit, but…
Dry: We thought Link would never say such a thing. It felt really wrong. (laughter)
Terada: No matter what we tried to get him to say, it just wasn’t good.
Dry: No one knew the answer to the question – What would Link say? And of course we wouldn’t, he never spoke before! (laughs) That’s why we needed an environment where he can’t talk, and that led to the formation of part of the story of the game.
