Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa was asked by an investor during the last AGM if the company was considering ways to prevent scalpers from buying up stock of the next console and reselling it at inflated prices on eBay, etc. Furukawa said their plan is to produce and ship as many units as possible to satisfied the needs of consumers. Once they are convinced that this goal is possible, they will then consider how best to avoid bulk buying and overselling. Sony did something similar with the PlayStation 5 after launch as they invited users to purchase the console from their online store. Here is what Mr. Furukawa had to say:
“In terms of resale measures when launching new hardware, we recognize that the most important thing is to first produce and deliver volumes that can meet customer demand. We will then consider whether there are other possible measures that can be taken.”
