It's been a while since our last Interview, but we are returning our series of articles that see us discussing people in a unique way and shining a light on their exciting roles within the game community.
In this case, we meet Tim aka Super Super Faker from Instagram, a graphic designer who does a great job of seeing through the eyes of some of the most recent and historic bodybuilding games.
Nintendo's Life: So, how did the "Super Mario Faker" account begin?
Tim aka "Super Mario Faker": So, 4 years ago I started an Instagram page documenting my game collection. But because I was always working until 7pm, I didn't get a chance to take good pictures in the evening because of the bad light. So I started editing the covers and screens to make it look good. After a while, I was done with the actual games that hadn't come out yet and I saw people getting mad and asking how I got them early. Which is what gave me the impression that I started doing completely ridiculous things like that Super Mario on PS4. Instagram then blocked my other page for no reason and I decided to give my calls their page. And that’s how Super Faker was born.
I read Graphic Design so making them is a piece of cake for me. A few years ago, I lost my job as a designer. I'm one of the official PlayStation Magazine designers here in Belgium, so it was great for me to work again.
How do you decide which games / fields to work with?
Well at first I was like, Nintendo Switch is a really cool tool, but it doesn't have any games for me indeed seek. So I started to think what I really wanted to play. Although I like to be like…. ”, I actually want to play Great Trilogy of effects on the PS4 ". Every generation I felt sad to leave some games behind, you know? And I know there are hundreds of people who feel the same way. Every month I ask people to submit requests, as crazy as possible. It's a fun way to connect with my fans.
Can you tell us a little about your creative process?
Of course, I usually start by taking a general picture of the game and the platform. After that I compose a cover for the fake game and edit in the picture I took before. Sometimes I completely change the platform; Sometimes Photoshop is an amiibo to go with. I have invented a false switch pack, Game Boy, Nintendo DS. Depending on how much time we have right now. I try not to spend more than 45 minutes on something else that is fully recognized.
Should you have a large collection of your games and amiibo, do you consider yourself a powerful collector?
Oh, yes, I have a few thousand games and I think between 60-80 carton boxes and handhelds. I started collecting games about 15 years ago so my apartment is actually a small museum. From all the Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox platforms to smaller things like Nokia G-gage and SEGA Game Gear.
I collect sculptures, templates, art books, posters and Funko Pops. With the amiibo front, I think I have all the amiibo released in Europe and the US. The only ones missing Monster Hunter others that came from Japan only.
What is acceptance like in your work?
Most of the time, it has been it is amazing. I got 1.7 million likes in my first year, gained 45,000 followers so people love it so much. But yes I do get my fair share of hate and negative comments. I think some people get paid for spending an hour Googling to buy a copy Fallout 3 with their Nintendo switch. Or people don't read the theory and think I'm lying. But some fans are just waiting when someone tries to call me for ideas. "Do you know this is a lie?"
Looks like you're really excited, which project (s) did you emphasize you enjoyed the most?
I just did a Game of Ten counting down, which was a lot of fun but also a huge challenge because I was forced to do two games every day. For me The escape Switch Lite it was so much fun to do; it has been watched nearly 300,000 times, which is a hot thing to mind. I'm really excited about creating amiibo. Recently I did a Skyrim Ring Fit Adventure, which I really liked. It's a challenge to keep it fresh and new, so it's very rewarding when I find a new kind of fake game.
If you had to choose just one of your references to be real, what would it be and why?
That is very difficult. I'll have to go with Metal Gear Solid remake. I still have such fond memories of the first Metal Gear Solid and it breaks my heart that it can't come to me after so many years. I mean Two Serpents remember on GameCube you don't do it to me. The controls are complicated and the drawings are too short and too bad for me to enjoy. So if Konami can just do with Metal Gear Solid what Capcom is doing with it Resident Evil right now, I'm really excited. And while they have it, they can give Silent Hill the same treatment.
What are your future plans for the account?
I hope to hit the 100k mark on Instagram this year and I want to focus more on the things I love to do. People have been begging me to make YouTube vids, log on Twitter and Facebook, and broadcast on Twitch. And it's been very stressful for all these forums, working full-time and getting a degree in 3D animation in the evenings. So 2020 will have some fun with me.
