Reveal one of Goku’s earliest designs in existence
The official Dragon Ball website revealed one of the first designs of Goku as a child drawn by Akira Toriyama himself about 40 years ago, in 1984.
This website continues to surprise us with never-before-seen content from the series, with everything that happened behind the scenes, although posts are deleted within 24 hours. As we know, the genius Toriyama must have drawn hundreds of sketches of Goku and the rest of the characters. But some of them he drew even before publishing the manga and having the story established.
It is a very common practice among mangakas, as also happened in Naruto and One Piece. Artists start sketching the first idea that comes to mind and continue working on the character from there, usually deviating from the original concept.
But Akira Toriyama had a very clear idea or trusted his first instinct, since one of Goku’s first sketches looks almost exactly like the final version, but without the tail. It’s incredible how easily Toriyama conveys fighting intent and expression of conflict in a simple early sketch of Goku, but there’s a reason he’s known as a genius.
