Evening Star’s new 3D platformer Penny’s Big Breakaway got off to a solid start when it arrived last month, but was limited to 30 FPS. Fortunately, that will change in the next update, with developer Christian Whitehead confirming that the upcoming console update will unlock the Switch’s framerate.
This will allow players to choose between 30FPS and 60FPS options. It will be similar to Bomb Rush Cyberfunk (which could mean this frame rate may not necessarily maintain silky smooth performance), but it will at least be an option. This update will also add anti-aliasing to 30FPS.
The console version of the latest patch is awaiting “first-party approvals” before it can run. In the meantime, here’s a look at the latest patch notes for PC, which should at least give you an idea of what to expect when the Switch update arrives.
In short, players can expect some fixes for Penny, YoYo, improvements and even some fixes (which includes more fixes). Here’s a full review via Steam (note about patches may contain spoilers
Patch Notes for Penny’s Big Breakaway v1.2 (PC)
Today we released a patch that fixes several issues. It also includes updates and improvements to existing functions. Be sure to update your game to the latest version. Instead of making any changes below, we’ll re-set the leaderboard for 4-2. This patch fixes a bug that existed in this level that allowed players to skip a large portion of the level. We’ll continue to monitor the game for future fixes and patches, but in the meantime, thanks for playing Penny’s Big Breakaway!
Penny has been practicing her performances! She will no longer…
- Stuck on wall ledges and other objects.
- He endlessly falls to his death in a boss encounter at the edge of the world.
- Slide up non-ground slopes.
- Stuck in a temporary endless slide.
- Disconnect with YoYo during Whirl.
- Lose all momentum when you start yoyoing from a distance.
- Endless tumbling.
- Lose all your speed when transitioning from Dash to Ride after a YoYo pull.
- Get stuck at the end of a zipline while holding Ride or Throw until you release.
Furthermore, YoYo trained and…
- Stop going through so many walls when you’re thrown.
- Now accelerate more consistently while moving at higher frames per second.
- Be the right size on the Zipline.
- Ledge Grab on multiple surfaces.
- Stop prematurely releasing Penny from Edge Grab.
We also asked the residents to do some repairs and upgrades in the world. Here’s what they’ve been working on…
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Removed video settings from cloud storage – now only stored locally!
- Added full screen video option.
- From now on we will reset the global cycle timer on reboot or crash
- Mark all the time deleted Show Pieces/Dilemmas for the scene in the Pause menu.
- Added quick restart feature to Time Attack – just hold the top button on your face!
- It is thickly reset to the maximum value when dropping out in Time Attack.
- Game elements will behave more deterministically when navigating a Time Attack (using a consistent global random start when restarting or dropping out).
- He reminded the residents not to start the timer until Penny left the starting platform in Time Attack.
- Scrapbook photos will now be displayed full screen when viewing them in the menu!
- Added ability to delete scrapbook unlock progress.
- Added depth of field video option.
- He messed with the Turnstile so that Penny consistently launches from the intended drop point.
- The Rolling Log is adapted so that it does not roll over when hitting an inclined surface.
REPAIRS:
- Fixed the suction pipe so that it will now always eject Penny with the desired movement.
- Politely asked the Peng Balloon not to cause a soft lock at the end of Pengoville 2 when it lands on Penny after landing on the Busker Stage.
- He reminded the Scatter Birds that their shadows should not disappear for a frame before flying away.
- Turn the swirl screw in the final act so that it spins in the correct direction.
- Fixed HUD no longer drawing after going off screen.
- When opening the pause menu the same frame Penny drops out, the stage will now play music properly.
- Fixed water splash VFX.
- Fixed visual issues with failed transition.
- Fixed the Cannon object to no longer point to invalid target object references.
- Boombox hit so SFX is a problem after defeat spoiler Judge Rufus does not appear again.
- Lubricate the ball bearings so that the vertical movement of the camera now always follows the correct speed (scaling the delta time of the camera slack).
