It seem Niantic hasn’t been able to replicate the success they saw with Pokemon GO on other franchises and has therefore announced that four projects it is working on have been canceled and subsequently they have cut 8% of their work force. The projects which have been cacelled include Heavy Metal (Transformers game) Hamlet (Niantic and Punchdrunk project for the theatrical company) and Blue Sky and Snowball. As you may remember, in 2019 Niantic launched Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, which was shut down earlier this year and the also created Pikmin Bloom, which has failed to captivate users, but is still running. The company is now working on NBA All-World
In an email to staff reviewed by Bloomberg, Niantic Chief Executive Officer John Hanke wrote that the company was “facing a time of economic turmoil” and had already been “reducing costs in a variety of areas.” But Hanke said Niantic needs to “further streamline our operations in order to best position the company to weather any economic storms that may lie ahead.”
