While switchch continues to move from strength to strength – it has just enjoyed its best quarter, selling more than 10 million – its old relative the 3DS is steadily behind.
Nintendo's dual-use handset managed to handle 620,000 devices worldwide globally between March and December 2019, a 73 percent decrease than the rate it ruled over the previous financial year. Software sales reached 4.10 million units, down 63 percent year-over-year.
Console | Selling Hardware (Million) | Selling Software (Million) |
Boy's Game / Boy's Game | 118.69 | 501.11 |
Boy Advance Advance | 81.51 | 377.42 |
Nintendo DS | 154.02 | 948.69 |
Nintendo 3DS | 75.71 | 382.22 |
It's clear that the 3DS line – while still winning over 75 million units sold since its launch and is home to some amazing games – is all but dead. Nintendo doesn't produce any of its games, and it only offers 2DS system variants.
However, the company remains bullish about its future – perhaps by 2020 the year it will admit that the 3DS is dead.
