The Nintendo Music app is great. A chance to listen to official Nintendo music from Nintendo might not seem like a big deal, but after all these years of searching, it sure does.
However, with a library of iconic soundtracks now at their fingertips, some have begun to reminisce about when Nintendo did this before. Not in the app, but in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Come on, don’t tell us you forgot your music player!
During Smash Ultimate Direct 2018, we got our first detailed look at the game’s ‘Sounds’ section β a library of over 800 tracks, arranged by series, available for your listening pleasure. You can even compile your favorites into a playlist (ring any bells?) and listen to them on the go with the Switch’s screen off. “It’s like using your Nintendo Switch as a music player,” Sakurai proudly told us during that Direct. Yes, it sure is.
It’s a very cool but admittedly pretty easy to forget feature when you think about it. And the reveal of Nintendo Music only highlighted its awkwardness:
Okay, maybe very few people actually used the Smash Ultimate library as a replacement for Spotify, but it was still pretty neat! Who knows, maybe we’ll start making playlists there and running around with the Switch while we wait for more songs to hit Nintendo Music (we won’t).
Just another sign that Sakurai is ahead of the curve, we guess.
