Mozart and Mario may sound very similar in name, but they don’t have much else in common — apart from that time Mozart was in a little-known SNES/NES game called Mario’s Time Machine, but let’s not worry about that for now.
We mean you have to be pretty damn creative to combine the two in an opera, but that’s exactly what LA’s Pacific Opera Project has done with their retelling of Mozart’s opera, Magic Flute — or as they call it, #Superflute.
POP is a group that tries to offer “quality opera that’s affordable, accessible and fun,” and as part of that goal, they’ve already done mash-ups — Mozart and Star Trek, Mozart and Scarfaceeven Mozart and COVID. They last released the Nintendo-flavored Magic Flute in 2019, which featured characters such as Mega Man, Donkey Kong, Wario, Zelda, and Pit from Kid Icarus.
Here is what the director said about the play (from LAist):
“[The theme] it’s just set up so well, because you have Tamino in The Magic Flute, going on missions and trying to find his princess, Pamina — which is Zelda and Link. And then you have Mario, who is a coin collector — Papageno is a bird collector, so it’s a pretty close correlation.”
If this is even half as good as that Nintendo-themed burlesque we went to a while back, we’ll be booking tickets to LA Sharpish. And if you’re already in LA — you can buy tickets right here.
