The N64 Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack library is home to a few weird little bugs that keep us on our toes while playing some of the cartridge classics. Last week we noticed a strange speed issue in the recently added Banjo-Tooie, and now we have another one, this time from Super Mario 64.

As the source of all obscure Mario lore pointed out on Twitter, @MarioBrothBlogthe european expansion pack is home to a bug that results in some weird tipfelers on select level names.

According to Mario Broth, both ‘Cool, Cool Mountain’ and ‘Big Boo’s Haunt’ are subject to the bug, with the letters ‘O’ and ‘U’ changing if you change levels enough. This means that with a handful of level changes, your pause screen could be greeted with ‘Cool, Cuol Mountain,” “Cool, Cool Otherwise,” or “Big Boo’s Haont‘. Strange.

What’s even weirder is that no one seems to even know what causes the bug. Of course, it’s hardly a game changer and we can’t see Nintendo rushing to patch it in a hurry, but it’s still another flaw in the NSO N64 library.

Now just wait until the speedrunning community finds a way to exploit this typo to shave milliseconds off a complete run…
