A live-action Zelda movie is already in the works, but beyond that, it's unclear how else this legendary Nintendo series might be adapted to the big screen in the future.
Enter Sonic 3 screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller – who recently revealed in the same interview with IGN the video games they'd “love” to turn into movies if given the chance. The most exciting of the series happens to be the GameCube classic Wind Waker.
The two apparently have fond memories of this particular entry and just wanted to put the idea “out there” about a possible “Wind Waker spin-off,” “maybe” once Nintendo is done with its more traditional live-action shoot.
Josh Miller: “I think another simple one that we can answer, because the movie is already happening and we're not already making it, would be Zelda. I remember always when we were playing Wind Waker, we always thought, man, I mean, that would It would probably be weird if they started the Zelda movie with a more classic Hyrule, but we both loved Wind Waker and it's such a cinematic Zelda movie, I guess we'll release it to the world, maybe we can do a Wind Waker spin-off.”
Some other video games the pair would be interested in adapting for cinema include Golden Ax and A Boy and His Blob. They are also currently adapting the 'Game of the Year' winner It Takes Two, and to add to that, a fourth film outing for Sonic is reportedly already confirmed.
Nintendo's Zelda action film was originally announced last November and was directed by Wes Ball, with Shigeru Miyamoto helming the project. The latest update to Nintendo's timetable states that it will arrive before the end of the decade, but apparently after the next Mario movie is due out in 2026.
