January 21, 1999, original Super Smash Bros. released for Nintendo 64 in Japan. For the past 21 years, Smash has become one of the most celebrated, respected, and hype-indising series available on Nintendo's platforms.
Developed by HAL Laborator and published by Nintendo, Super Smash Bros. it brought together a Nintendo all-star in one game, struggling to fight and hit each other on stage – but you knew that already, right? The original game had 12 characters to choose from – Captain Falcon, Donkey Kong, Fox, Jigglypuff, Kirby, Link, Luigi, Mario, Ness, Pikachu, Samus and Joshi – which seemed like enough at the time.
Of course, things have come out in great shape since then, in the latest edition of the series, Super Smash Bros. Finally, boasting the vast majority of the 82 characters already announced six more are on the way. The game has been more than just a celebration of Nintendo's frames, which now contain non-Nintendo characters, some of which have even appeared on rival rivals.
The passion for the latest game, coupled with the success of Nintendo Switch, helped make it the best-selling fighting game in history. We doubt the game's creators really expected that when they made the first game all those years ago, but the crossover series has proven to be a really winning formula.
