So that’s our opinion, but what about the rest? To help you get a better idea of what to expect from this remaster, whether you’re playing for the first time or a newcomer, here’s a look at just some of the critical reviews circulating online:
Review of our colleagues at Push Square gave it a 7 out of 10 – noting how this RPG was still just as charming years later, even if the remaster itself was unfinished:
“Nearly two decades later, Tales of Symphonia Remastered is a reminder of how well-crafted the original GameCube and PS2 title was. A few niggles aside, this is still a great action RPG, full of charm and character. The only real downside is that it’s a remaster leaves a lot to be desired.”
Despite numerous errors and even some crashes, Hardcore player rated 4 out of 5:
“Tales of Symphonia remains one of the greatest highlights of the series…What hurts is that this remastered version has glaring issues that need to be fixed. Far from being impossible to recommend, we’d actually still absolutely wish it had never been haven’t played it before, but with no autosave and multiple recorded crashes, it’s hard to tell people to run out and get it right away without proper patches to fix the bigger issues.”
Team on Noisy pixel gave it a 6 out of 10, calling it “the worst version” of the beloved classic. Ouch!
“Tales of Symphonia is a brilliant action JRPG that set the precedent for the genre. Even all these years later, its captivating storytelling, wide array of side activities, character interaction, and layers of combat options all combine to make it a must-see adventure experience. Still , as a remaster, this particular edition fails to hit the mark, ultimately delivering a lackluster and disappointing revival that could have been so much more.”
Spanish website nintenderos was much more generous with the scoring, giving it an 8 out of 10, but also felt that it didn’t achieve much as a remaster:
“Tales of Symphonia Remastered remains the legendary Japanese RPG that it has been since its inception. So it’s a remarkable work with a release that hardly adds anything new beyond its availability on modern consoles. If you haven’t been able to play this game until now, this is a good opportunity to do so , but if you’ve done it before and remember well, there’s not much reason to go back on the adventure again.”
