Following the launch of Braid: Anniversary Edition on May 14, 2024, creator Jonathan Blow complained about the game’s performance, calling sales “absolutely terrible”.
Blow’s thoughts were collected in a video from the YouTube channel Cooling fan and reported by our friends at Push Square. It takes clips from his Twitch sessions where he answers questions from fans, many of whom seem fixated on selling Braid: Anniversary Edition.
The clips illustrate Blow’s growing frustration with his performance: the first one from May 20 had a more upbeat vibe, with Blow stating that it’s “a little too early” to determine what Braid’s current sales might look like in the coming weeks and months. Fast forward to July 21st and Blow simply states that the game’s sales “were terrible, they were absolutely terrible.”
He also notes that Steam is arguably the biggest platform for the studio, but if the decision had been made to save on porting costs and drop releases on Switch and other consoles, sales would still have been disappointing.
Unfortunately, this is the reality of releasing a game in 2024 for many studios. The competition is simply too much compared to Braid’s initial launch in 2008. It’s a shame, as we thought the re-release was worth checking out, awarding it a coveted 9/10 in our review.
