This news is not directly related to Nintendo. However, it is always interesting to know the future of Angry Birds and this one has surprised us, as it is related to SEGA.

Specifically, it was confirmed some time ago that SEGA has now completed its acquisition of Rovioresponsible for Angry Birds. After some rumors, it was officially confirmed and it seems to have been very profitable.

SEGA has published its financial report for the first quarter ended June 30, 2024 and shows these figures:

  • Net sales decreased by 3.2% year-on-year.
  • The entertainment division (including video games) increased by 34%.
  • The company’s acquisition of Angry Birds developer Rovio helped boost revenue, earning 8.7 billion yen.
  • Revenue increased by 181%.
  • Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance was a best seller, with 500,000 copies sold in three days.
  • The Sonic the Hedgehog movies continue to perform well, with the third film scheduled for December 2024.
  • Persona 5 Royal boosted Persona series sales by another 790,000 units.
  • The Persona series has sold approximately 9 million copies as of April 2022.
  • Other titles mentioned include Vanillaware’s Unicorn Overlord, Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, and Persona 3 Reload, which continue to sell well.
  • Although overall profits were down, the company attributes this to the successful launch of the Smart Pachislot Hokuto No Ken in the same period last year.

Future games like Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic X Shadow Generations, Atlus’ Metaphor: ReFantazio, and the mobile party game Sonic Rumble will no doubt help this number continue to improve.

We will have to be attentive in the futureespecially knowing that there’s an Angry Birds series on the way.
