Sonic Origins Plus is just around the corner, launching on Switch this week June 23, 2023. Adding a bunch of extras to the Sonic Origins base game, including Amy as a playable character and twelve Game Gear titles, it also marks the first instance of the collection getting a full physical release.
As such, copies have already come off store shelves and into the hands of eager fans, and it seems some people aren’t happy with how Sega handled certain aspects of the game. Some of the complaints seem pretty valid to us, although others might be a bit nit-picky. We’ll let you be the judge.
Let’s start with Amy first. It is revealed, of course, that Amy can transform into Super Amy after collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds, just like Sonic and Co. Some have pointed out, however, that Amy’s ‘Super’ form simply offers a slight color change rather than a completely redesigned sprite.
Fair assessment, right? Well, not really… As pointed out in the tweet below, Sonic is the only character to get a sprite redesign when he transforms into his ‘Super’ form. All other characters, including Tails, Knuckles, Mighty, and Ray, similarly received only a basic color change to denote power-ups.
But that’s not all, as players also seem to be unhappy with the way the character select screen works, and we can Somehow see where they are coming from with this. As you can see in the tweet below, all available characters are lined up, including three combos that add tails to the mix.
“That looks good”, you might think. Yeah, it’s not a huge problem, but previous Sonic games, including Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic Mania, have separate save slots that let you cycle through the available characters. It’s certainly a more elegant solution than what we have in Sonic Origins Plus, and if anything, it just highlights the fact that we can’t play as Sonic and Amy together. Weird huh?
Finally, fans aren’t exactly happy with how the Game Gear titles sound in the new collection. While certainly passable in its own right, there is a distinct difference between the sound of the original Game Gear releases and this new collection. Observe:
Sounds pretty echoey, doesn’t it? Granted, it’s not offensively bad by any means, but those who played the original releases will definitely notice the difference.
Hey, the point is, Sonic fans have high standards. However, we’re not convinced that Sonic Origins Plus will end up being the disaster that some are predicting. However, we’ll find out for sure when the game launches later this week.
