Like most Sonic fans, we here at Nintendo Life love GBA’sin advance‘ Series. We have fond memories of playing through the Advance trilogy (and even the tangentially related battle RPG and pinball spinoffs) in the early 2000s, but aside from SonicN N-Gage port and Virtual Console release in Japan, we haven’t had a chance to play them on new hardware since then.
With the fan adoration of these games, a remake or remaster seems like a no-brainer, right? Well, in a recent interview with VGCSonic Team leader Takashi Iizuka admitted that he would be very much in favor of it.
When asked about the potential for the Advance series to be re-released (either as a remastered collection or in the GBA NSO library), Iizuka was quick to say that there are currently no plans for any such remake or remaster, but added cryptically, “We don’t know what the future holds.”
Talking about how Sonic Origins reintroduced fans to the original and CD look of the blue blur, Iizuka said that Sonic Team would “love” to do something similar for the Advance series, “if we have the chance.”
Here is the full quote from the VGC interview:
There are currently no plans to remake or remaster the Sonic Advance series, but we don’t know what the future holds.
Katsuyuki Shigihara was the director on Sonic Origins, which took Sonic 1, 2, 3 and CD, and we remastered it and brought it out for fans to enjoy. And if we have an opportunity, if there’s an opportunity for the Advance series to get that treatment as well, or whatever circumstances may arise, we’d love to do that.
Of course, “no plans” makes this the furthest from confirmation you can get, but it’s still an exciting idea! Whatever ‘opportunities’ should arise, make them happen, Sega.
Elsewhere in the interview, Iizuka teased what we can expect from the new Sonic X Shadow Generations content and shut down any talk of a Chao Garden spin-off title.
