As many of you will know, Sonic's next live-action film has left a trace of controversy in the industry because his first design terrified hedgehog fans, and the managers immediately decided to change it.
The decision to redesign the character was so quick that it felt like something natural and unimportant to the team; it seemed even that they would be willing to change it as many times as necessary until the fans agreed. The truth is that the director of the film, Jeff Fowler, feared that fans would not accept the redesign and wondered what would happen in that case.
These were his words in a recent interview with Digital spy:
I think it had been about five months since the first breakthrough. We had worked very hard on our character updates. It was definitely a bit like "what will happen if they don't like this?" But in reality, everyone who saw it internally while working on the film responded positively. It really felt as if, once we shared it with the fans, they would accept it and be excited.
