In a recent video, Square Enix commented on why they decided that Chrono Cross should be remastered. The announcement of the remaster of the classic RPG was initially intended to mark the game’s 20th anniversary. However, the producer of the remaster, Koichiro Sakamoto, has now publicly stated that there was more to it than that. Sakamoto says that they depended on the Game Archive service for their classic RPGs on the Sony PlayStation 3 console, but when the PlayStation 4 became available for purchase they weren’t sure if that console would continue with the Game Archive service, so how would they stay on the safe side, they decided to do a remaster project. Here’s what was said:
“When the project was started, Chrono Cross was probably going to become unplayable. On the PlayStation 3, there was a Game Archive service that allowed you to play games for the PlayStation 1. But the PlayStation 4 was already on the market. At the time, we didn’t know if the PlayStation 4 would also have a Game Archive service. It looked like Chrono Cross might become unplayable. So, the remaster project was set up. That’s the back story.”
